No Meeting             6/28/2019

Hello Fellow Artists,

Hope everyone is enjoying these beautiful sunny days. Time for iced drinks and short pants!

This is a note to remind everyone that there will NOT be a meeting at the Wasilla Senior Center this first Friday of JULY. This is a holiday weekend and I’m sure we all have plans to celebrate Independence Day. There are a couple of other things to note also.

Mark your calendars for August 2nd. This day we will have our Picnic-Pizza-Paintout at Wasilla Lake. The canopy has been reserved and lets hope for continued good weather. It should be a fun get-together for all of us. Pizza will be provided (this avoids having to cook burgers) and side salads, chips and dip, deserts, or anything else you might like to bring is encouraged.

We are also going to have to change the college meeting days to a Saturday due to room availability. The college has informed us that the room is going to be used this coming semester both days and evenings during the week. I will contact the scheduler and reserve the 3rd Saturday of the months ahead beginning in September.
It looks like we will have WASI on the 1st Friday of the month and college room on the 3rd Saturday of the month. This is not the best of options but its what we get.

Meanwhile enjoy these long days of summer and plan to join us at the picnic. I will send out more reminders as it gets closer to the dates. Have a wonderful 4th of July and stay cool!

Sincerely,
Terry Phillips

1st Friday meeting at WASI         6/2/2019

Hello Members.

Just a note to let each of you know that Friday the 7th of June will be our first summertime meeting at WASI (Wasilla Senior Center) .  Remember Jim Leach worked hard to get this space back for us.

As you know Jim has passed away and his funeral was today.  It was a beautiful service and memories of Jim and his contributions to the community were recognized.  Jim was a member of many boards. He was on the Board of the Bird and Wildlife Rescue Group, as well as the Board of Iditarod Veterinarians, and of course the Board of the VFAA many times.

He never gave up on VFAA when many were willing to shut it down.  He always was searching for places where our work could be displayed and donated much time , energy and equipment to promote the arts.  Because of Jim

We are able to meet at WASI on the First Friday of every month.  Since the college is no longer available for the 1st and 3rd  weeks of the month this is a good thing.   I am looking into having one of our meetings at the College be on a Saturday. So we will hopefully have 2 venues for meeting places.

WASI will be open from 11:00 – 4:00  for those interested.  Please remember that the tables  must be covered and paint must be contained.  The room needs to be put back to normal before leaving.  Please respect these rules and if you are the last to leave please double check that all is clean and in order.  Simple enough to do.  Many members wanted to continue meeting in the summer and now we have a place for every month of the year.

I hope all of you are enjoying the weather and the long daylight hours.  Also you may want to mark your calendars for August 2nd,  a Friday.  We have a summer picnic at Wasilla Lake.  We will provide Pizza for all, and any side salads or snacks are welcome. This will be a paint out. So Picnic! Pizza! And Paint!!! Pray
for good weather too. The canopy at the park is reserved for us!

That’s it for updates!  Hope to see any and all of you at WASI and the Lake!!!

 Sincerely,

Terry Phillips, President VFAA

4. OPPORTUNITY AT HOME AGAIN DÉCOR (BOARDWALK, CARRS MALL WASILLA) Jeannette will once again allow us to set up our wares on Saturday, May 11th and join in the Mothers Day Celebration! This is usually a well-attended event in a high traffic area. There is music, food, sales, and fun. Consider bringing a display of your work to sell. If its cold and windy dress appropriately. The hours are from 10:00-6:00.

5. PLEIN AIRE PAINTING DURING THE SUMMER: A phone tree has been suggested to call those interested in getting together on spur-of-the-minute decisions of where and when to meet up and go! If you would like to be on the phone tree please send me your name and phone number via terrylou@gci.net. AND AWAY WE GO!

6. FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT ATTEND THE RETREAT—DYAN NEWTON (watercolorist from Lower 48) is the guest presenter this year. Dyan is an award winning artist whose impressionistic style is characterized by her lively brushwork and bright vivid colors. She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector. Dyan has agreed to stay an extra couple of days and give a workshop at the college. This is scheduled for September 13th and 14th. If you're unable to go to the retreat this is your opportunity to be part of an affordable workshop. Space is limited to 14 people, and the cost to you is $25.00 for 2-day workshop. This will be held in rooms 208 on Friday and 212 on Saturday at the Matsu College. To sign up notify Linda Peter's at lpeters@nome.net.

7. The Board would like for memebers to submit 1-3 names of non-profit organizations that VFAA may consider giving a donation. This year Wasilla Senior Center received $250.00 as a contribution from us to aid our community. Each year another entity will be considered by the board based on your suggestions.

8. The current Secretary of the Board has resigned due to health issues. We are asking for a volunteer to take on the position. No vote is required for a substitute. Let a board member know if you would like to help.

9. The Bird and Wildlife Folks expressed a big Thank You to all who participated in the glass painting. The glasses were a huge success at the fundraiser. One set of 4 sold for $80.00 at auction. Others were individually scooped up during on-the-spot sales. VFAA also thanks all who participated for a job well done!
That’s it for now. Thanks for keeping up with the activity. If you have any questions give me a call or email and I’ll try to answer as best I can. Have a Great Day !!

Hello Members,                                                                          2/18/2019   8:26am

Last week I met with Sam Dinges who is managing the Palmer Museum of History and Art.  There are a couple of opportunities coming up that our members can have access to in the coming months ahead.

1.  The Art and Garden Fair is scheduled for the 2nd Saturday in July.  Right now there are 4 spots available at $42.50. This is half off the regular price for our members only.  When you pay mention you are a VFAA member to receive your discount.

You must fill out an application and drop payment off at the museum as soon as possible.  Applications may be found at the museum website or filled out when you turn your payment in.

  https://www.palmermuseum.org

You may consider sharing a booth with a fellow member but remember its first come first serve and you should act soon!

2.  The 2nd opportunity is new to us this year and it involves Friday Flings in Palmer.

Sam would like to have interested artists sign up to display their work on a wall reserved for your work inside the museum.  Each persons display will hang for one week and the artist is required to be in attendance for a 2 hour period on the Friday your display begins.  You may set up a demo area if you'd like or just be there to speak to folks about your work.  Again all the info you need along with an application can be found on the website:

https://www.palmermuseum.org/artist-of-the-week

There is no charge for this opportunity.  But you must sign up for your week and turn in your paperwork.

As a reminder Friday Flings include tourists and locals and is a high traffic area for viewers.

Check out the website for complete instructions and jump on the bandwagon.  Let me say it's a great space and a good opportunity.

Sincerely,

Terry
