The VFAA 5th Annual Artist Retreat is a great painter's get-away. This is a 3-day event for painters of all types and all levels of experience. The retreat will be held at North Star Bible Camp, a campus comprised of 140 pristine acres on the shores of 12 Mile Lake in Willow, Alaska. This scenic location offers plentiful plein air painting locations as well as multiple spaces for indoor painting.

This Years Featured Artists

Dyan Newton

DYAN NEWTON  is an award winning artist whose impressionistic style is characterized by her lively brushwork and bright, vivid colors. She has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector. Dyan's work is collected across the United States and internationally. Friday & Saturday Watercolor Workshops: Both workshops are appropriate for all levels of skill. Dyan will teach how to create energy in your art. She will focus on ways to preserve the white of your paper and obtain strong values. She will also demonstrate the use of expressive, clean brushstrokes that keep paintings looking spontaneous and fresh.


Kurt Jacobson

Alaskan-born Kurt Jacobson, expresses his great love of the outdoors through his art. He is known as a plein air painter who strives to capture "the emotions and light of the moment". Kurt helped develop the Arts in The Parks program and is the recipient of several awards. He has served as Past President of the Alaska Artists Guild and is a member of VFAA, Alaska Plein Air Painters, the American Impressionist Society and is an Associate member of Oil Painters of America. FRIDAY: Kurt will teach how to create a cohesive plein air painting through the use of value and color choice. He will discuss selection of a focal point and how to determine the dominant elements of a scene to create an effective composition. Kurt will begin with a short demo followed by work with individual artists. Please come prepared for the weather.

SATURDAY Water, water water! Kurt will focus on composition, values, color choice and brushstrokes in landscape painting where water is the key element. Scenes will include still water, rushing water and reflections on water. Class will begin with a short demo followed by work with individual artists. Photos provided (bring your own as well).


Nancy Angelini Crawford

Nancy Angelini Crawford is an Alaskan artist who is known for her plein air paintings. Her style of work has been coined "emotional impressionism" and includes oil, watercolor and pastel pieces. Nancy has shown her work in a variety of galleries and studied and traveled worldwide. She is a popular instuctor and has won various awards. Nancy is a longtime VFAA member.  Her art can be viewed at https://angelinistudio.com/

 

Friday and Saturday Pastel Wokshops: Nancy's pastel classes will show you how to start simple and finish with finesse.  In these classes she'll cover composition, values and poetry in painting.  Day one will be from photos and day two will focus on still life.


Gina Murrow

Gina Murrow is the founder and artist-in-chief at Paint a Scarf. She and her husband, David, invented the upright, multi-position silk painting rack. Gina is a member of VFAA. Learn more about Gina and Paint a Scarf at https://paintascarf.com/premium/

 

Saturday evening Silk Scarf Painting: Gina will teach a special method for painting on dry silk. Using Gina's patented upright multi-position rack, you will create your own beautiful silk scarf featuring poppies. All materials provided.
